MANIKIN: The Art and Architecture of Anthony C Lewis

Edited by Geoffrey Maclean and Brian Lewis
Texts by Anthony C. Lewis, Geoffrey Maclean, Brian Lewis and Gerry Lewis

In 2009, acla:works published MANIKIN: The Art and Architecture of Anthony C. Lewis – a book on the life and work of Tony Lewis, our firm’s founding father and the first Trinidad-born architect to set up practice locally. It was a lengthy and intense process: we had to edit down Tony’s extensive oeuvre and, even today, are still discovering projects we hadn’t known existed. Although publishing the book proved labour- and time-intensive, we are happy to have made this important contribution towards documenting not just our beginning, but the foundation of modern architecture in Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean.

"Compiled largely from a manuscript written by Lewis himself before his death in 2008...[Manikin] is an exquisitely produced cornucopia of photos, family history, ground plans, blueprints and paintings. It is a timely document recording a seminal period in the development of indigenous architecture—which is currently being metamorphosed into a 2020 skyscape.”– Simon Lee, “New book cherishes Trinidad’s modernity” [review], Trinidad Guardian, Dec. 8, 2009.
